Kianous Stavros: Thyroidectomy with local anesthesia

Total thyroidectomy is a demanding operation, which is usually performed under general anesthesia. However, there are few cases of patients for whom the administration of general anesthesia is considered almost prohibitive. In such cases the responsibility and the performance of such surgeries must be undertaken by a strictly specialized surgical team.

The endocrine gland surgery team of the Kianous Stavros Clinic, which consists of surgeons Mr. Theodosis Papavramidis, Ioannis Pliakos, Moses Moussidis and anesthesiologist George Kotsovolis, has long experience and expertise in the field.

Recently, a total thyroidectomy was performed to treat thyroid cancer in a 41-year-old patient with a history of cystic fibrosis, without the administration of general anesthesia. The patient, due to cystic fibrosis, had severe obstructive pulmonary disease and was classified as a high-risk patient. Assessing the overall condition, the patient underwent surgery under local anesthesia (bilateral block) of the superficial cervical plexus in combination with intoxication (mild sedation).

Euromedica Kianous Stavros, is a standard and integrated health unit in Thessaloniki with the ability to provide a wide range of specialized surgeries, pathological services and examinations. The Clinic will soon offer new, specialized medical procedures and departments, while the renewal of its medical equipment with advanced state-of-the-art equipment is already in progress.
