Fertilia: 6+1 questions about in vitro fertilization

Fertilia by Genesis gives answers to 6+1 questions about in vitro fertilization and provides useful information about the process

What is In Vitro Fertilization?

In vitro fertilization is a method of assisted reproduction in which eggs and sperm, after being collected, are fertilized in the embryological laboratory. The formed embryos remain in the laboratory usually for 5 days and then the embryo is transferred and the cryopreservation process is followed for the remaining embryos. In vitro fertilization is the method of assisted reproduction with the highest success rates.

Are there more specialized methods involved in in vitro fertilization?

The first IVF took place in 1978 and since then it has evolved significantly in its individual areas. In most cases, the method of micro-fertilization (ICSI) is applied, in which the sperm is injected into the egg through a special needle, significantly increasing the chances of fertilization.

There are two main ways to achieve fertilization, which we use on a case-by-case basis in Fertilia by Genesis. The first is the classic in vitro fertilization method, in which eggs and sperm are placed in a nutrient plate. The second method of fertilization is micro-fertilization (ICSI – Intracytoplasmic sperm injection), in which the embryologist places a sperm with a special needle in each mature egg. The decision to choose the fertilization method is made by the gynecologist – assisted reproduction specialist, based on the quality of the sperm and the fertility history of the couple. Embryos formed through in vitro fertilization can be pre-implanted, that is, their chromosomes can be checked to see if they have a chromosomal abnormality. In Fertilia by Genesis we apply the preimplantation test, when there are specific indications, such as advanced age of the woman or history of miscarriage in the couple.

Why is IVF often associated with twin / multiple pregnancies?

This happens when more than one embryo is transferred to the uterus and they are then implanted. The decision on the number of embryos to be transferred is made by the reproductive doctor and the couple after discussion. The National Assisted Reproduction Authority sets limits for each age group of patients on the maximum number of embryos that can be transferred. During the procedure, the medical team of Fertilia by Genesis will take your history and will thoroughly study all your examinations in the context of infertility investigation. You will discuss treatment methods, your treatment plan and you may be asked to have further tests. The whole range of infertility tests can be done in state-of-the-art laboratories that operate within the GENESIS clinic.

Fertilia by Genesis embryologists, who staff the unit’s state-of-the-art laboratory, will also be present during your communication with the doctor. Throughout your treatment the Fertilia by Genesis doctor, embryo and nursing staff will be at your disposal for any questions that may arise.

Do I need to be absent from work for some time to undergo IVF treatment?

No. In vitro fertilization treatment involves ovarian stimulation, which lasts 10-12 days and will require 3 to 5 ultrasound sessions with the reproductive doctor. During this time you can work normally. On the day of ovulation in Fertilia by Genesis you will need to be absent from work and then you can return to normal. From the day of the embryo transfer onwards you can also work, as long as your work is not accompanied by physical exertion which could reduce the chances of success of your treatment.

Is there an age limit for IVF treatment?

There was a limit of 50 years for women, which was recently extended to 52 years, while for men there is no limit.

Are IVF drugs administered by my fund?

If you are insured with EOPPY, you can go through the special IVF committee that will check your file and give you the opportunity to get the drugs for ovarian stimulation for free. You will be informed in detail about the committee and the preparation of the file by the experienced staff of Fertilia by Genesis, who will be by your side throughout the preparation and submission phase of the file.

Is IVF a safe method of treatment?

To date, it is estimated that more than 8 million children have been born with this method and their number continues to grow. In vitro fertilization is a safe method of assisted reproduction, provided that all the rules set by the international scientific organizations are followed, something that we guarantee you in the state-of-the-art In vitro Fertilization Unit Fertilia by Genesis.
