World Thyroid Day, observed every year on May 25th, aims to raise public awareness about thyroid gland disorders and highlight the importance of prevention and early diagnosis.
The thyroid is a small but extremely important gland located at the base of the neck, affecting nearly every function of the body. Through the hormones it produces, it regulates metabolism, energy levels, body temperature, heart function, body weight, as well as concentration and mood.
Thyroid Gland Disorders
The most common thyroid disorders include:
- Hypothyroidism: when the thyroid is underactive and does not produce enough hormones.
- Hyperthyroidism: when the thyroid is overactive and produces excessive amounts of hormones.
- Thyroiditis: inflammatory or autoimmune conditions, such as Hashimoto’s thyroiditis.
- Thyroid nodules and goiter: structural abnormalities that require monitoring or further evaluation.
When the thyroid becomes imbalanced, it can significantly affect daily life and overall health. Symptoms such as severe fatigue, weight fluctuations, heart palpitations, insomnia, anxiety, hair loss, difficulty concentrating, or mood disorders may be associated with thyroid dysfunction. In some cases, thyroid diseases may also affect cardiovascular health, fertility, and overall quality of life.
Because many thyroid disorders develop without obvious symptoms in their early stages, preventive screening is the most important step toward early diagnosis and effective treatment.
