World Brain Day – Prevention Accessible to All

World Brain Day was established by the World Federation of Neurology (WFN) and is celebrated every year on July 22. Its goal is to raise public awareness about the importance of brain health, to strengthen the prevention of neurological diseases, and to encourage proper brain care at every age.

The brain controls every function of our body: movement, thought, memory, emotions, and perception. A strikingly large percentage of the global population will experience some form of brain-related illness during their lifetime.

According to data, more than 1 in 3 people globally (over 35%) will develop a neurological or mental disorder. The World Health Organization (WHO) reports that over 1 billion people today live with a neurological condition such as:

  • Alzheimer’s disease and dementia
  • Stroke
  • Epilepsy
  • Multiple sclerosis
  • Parkinson’s disease
  • Migraines and chronic headaches

Neurological disorders are the second leading cause of death and the leading cause of disability worldwide. Due to the increase in life expectancy, brain-related diseases (especially dementias) are expected to double by 2050. This highlights the importance of prevention, early diagnosis, and continuous care for brain health at all ages.

Prevention and early intervention can make a difference. Brain care starts with simple, everyday habits:

  • Healthy diet: foods rich in omega-3 fatty acids, B-complex vitamins, and antioxidants.
  • Physical exercise: increases blood flow to the brain.
  • Adequate sleep: essential for memory and information processing.
  • Mental activity: reading, learning new skills, puzzles.
  • Social interaction: boosts mood and helps prevent cognitive decline.
  • Avoiding smoking and excessive alcohol consumption.
  • Regular medical check-ups and preventive screenings.

Each year, the World Federation of Neurology (WFN) focuses on a different theme. This year’s theme highlights prevention and accessibility to care for all, emphasizing the need for equity in healthcare for neurological conditions. At Euromedica Group, through our 21 modern diagnostic centers and polyclinics, we promote and encourage prevention by providing high-level primary healthcare services related to the human brain. Brain care is not a luxury; it is essential to our quality of life. Let us stay informed, care for ourselves, and encourage those around us to do the same.
