October: Breast Cancer Awareness Month by Euromedica

For you. For your loved ones.

Breast cancer is the most common form of cancer in women worldwide and one of the leading causes of mortality. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), more than 2.3 million new cases are recorded every year, while approximately 1 in 8 women will develop the disease at some point in their lives.

The value of early diagnosis

Early diagnosis significantly increases survival rates. In its initial stages, the disease shows no symptoms, which is why regular preventive screening is essential. Preventive screening includes:

  • Breast Self-Examination and Clinical Examination by a doctor: The first step in the early recognition of suspicious changes.
  • Digital Mammography: The standard imaging method of the breast. The first mammogram should be performed between the ages of 35–40, while women over 40 should undergo annual screening.
  • Digital Mammography with 3D Tomosynthesis: Offers 42% higher sensitivity in detecting pathological areas compared to standard mammography. It provides excellent diagnostic accuracy and is especially suitable for women with dense breasts.
  • Breast Ultrasound: Can be performed as a standalone test for women under 35 years old. It can also be combined with mammography, enhancing early detection. Particularly useful for women with dense breast tissue.
  • Breast MRI: Usually performed in combination with the above tests or when specifically recommended by a doctor. Primarily used for high-risk women, such as carriers of BRCA1/2 mutations.

Risk factors

Breast cancer is associated with both non-modifiable factors (age, genetic predisposition, family history) and modifiable ones (obesity, alcohol consumption, smoking, sedentary lifestyle). Adopting a healthier lifestyle can substantially reduce the risk.
