The Dental CT scan, also known as a Dental Scan or Cone Beam Computed Tomography (CBCT), is a specialized imaging examination used in dentistry and maxillofacial medicine to provide three-dimensional imaging of the teeth, jaws (upper and lower), temporomandibular joints (TMJ), sinuses, and the surrounding bones and soft tissues. It offers highly detailed 3D images with lower radiation compared to conventional CT scans and is very useful for targeted interventions.
Dental CT is essential for:
- Planning dental implants
- Assessing bone density and structure
- Detecting cysts, tumors, or abscesses
- Investigating impacted wisdom teeth
- Orthodontic planning
- Preoperative evaluation for maxillofacial surgeries
- Evaluating injuries or fractures of facial bones
Procedure
The patient is seated or stands upright, and the head is positioned in a special holder. The scanner rotates around the head, capturing high-resolution 3D images. The procedure is very quick, lasting only a few seconds to one minute.
